Research

In a unique collaboration between an NGO and academia, Stahili partnered with Ton Liefaard, UNICEF Chair in Children’s Rights at Leiden University, and Ursula Kilkelly, Professor of Law at the School of Law, University College Cork, Ireland, to produce a cutting-edge textbook on the rights of the child. The textbook will be published by Springer Publishers later in 2018. We hope it will become a standard reference work for students of children’s rights law worldwide.

Advocacy

Advocating for children is at the heart of our work. We have joined forces with our friends and partners to advocate for a world where children grow up in families. In 2017 there were hopeful signs that governments are heeding the call for change in the way we care for vulnerable children. Action plans and policies to close orphanages and promote family-based care gathered momentum in different parts of the world.

Partnership

We continue to build exciting partnerships with government, other NGOs, academic institutions, and other civil society groups. When the Australian Parliament set up an inquiry into establishing a Modern Day Slavery Act, Stahili provided a case study of closing an orphanage in Kenya as part of Lumos’ submission to the inquiry.

Workshops

Stahili provides innovative workshops for children as well as practitioners and students. Our workshops cover a wide array of topics in children’s rights, including de-institutionalisation, child trafficking to orphanages, implementing children’s rights in the field, responsible donating and engagement, and children in armed conflict. Stahili is also proud to coordinate the NGO workshop for Leiden University’s Frontiers of Children’s Rights Course.

Monitoring and Reporting

Alongside the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative and the Lori E. Talsky Center for Human Rights of Women and Children at the Michigan State University College of Law, Stahili monitors and reports on the impact of armed conflict on children. This year we expanded our coverage to 12 countries in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Plans are underway to expand to 17 countries in 2018.
